Difference between crawler excavator and wheeled excavator

Difference between crawler excavator and wheeled excavator

The main difference between crawler excavator and wheeled excavator lies in their travel system and applicable working environment. Here are some key differences between these two types of excavators:

Travel device:

  • Wheeled excavator: Uses tires as travel device, can travel on hard roads, and usually does not require special transport vehicles to move between different construction sites.
  • Crawler excavator: Uses crawler tracks as travel device, provides better ground adhesion and stability, can work on soft or uneven ground, but usually cannot travel directly on the road.

Applicable working conditions:

  • Wheeled excavator: Suitable for relatively flat or hardened ground conditions such as urban construction, road construction, pipeline laying, especially when the ground needs to be protected.
  • Crawler excavator: Suitable for harsh environments such as earthwork, mining, wetlands or sandy land, and work places that require strong traction and stability.
  • Wheeled excavator: Has high maneuverability and speed, can quickly transfer to reduce transportation costs.
  • Crawler excavators: provide better traction and stability, and can maintain good operating performance in complex terrain.

Special designs:

  • Crawler excavators: Some crawler excavators can be equipped with rubber tracks to reduce damage to hard roads.
  • Wheeled excavators: Some wheeled excavators may use solid tires or specially designed tires to adapt to specific working environments.

When choosing an excavator, you need to consider the specific construction environment and operating requirements to determine which type of excavator is more suitable. For example, when working on a cement road, in order to avoid damaging the road surface, a wheeled excavator is usually selected; while in soft land or complex terrain, a crawler excavator may be more inclined to be used.
